Gallatin Bamboo Fly Rod 7'6" 4-wt Medium | Payne 100 Taper
The all-water 4-weight.
Some rods have a narrow use case. The Gallatin is not one of them. At 7'6" in a 4-weight, it has enough length for a full day on a mid-sized river and enough delicacy for the spring creek sections that make the upper Gallatin worth the drive. It's the 4-weight you reach for when you're not sure exactly what the day holds.
Medium action means it earns your cast - it doesn't rush it. On a good stretch of water with a dry fly on, it will be the best rod you've fished in a long time.
The Payne 100 Taper
Jim Payne built the 100 as his answer to the question of what a versatile 4-weight should do. Where the Payne 98 is a specialist - purpose-built for technical water and fine tippet - the 100 is the rod Payne designed for an angler who wanted one rod to cover more water. It loads a half-step quicker than the 98 and carries line a little further, without losing the presentation qualities that made Payne's tapers famous.
At 7'6", it's the most useful length in the 4-weight category: long enough to reach, short enough to cast in tight quarters, medium enough to protect a fish on the end of the line.
Built the Way a Bamboo Rod Should Be
The Gallatin is hand-planed to the standard that has defined Headwaters rods since 2002.
The fittings: A finely knurled double-locking downlocking reel seat with stabilized burled maple insert. Ultra-fine cork grip. Red agate stripping guide. Hard chrome guides wrapped in deep burgundy thread with a narrow black tip.
The tube: Cordura rod tube with rod sock included.
