Banana - Musa ‘Florida‘ (variegated)
This is an exceedingly rare variegated banana, prized by collectors. Also known as Hawaiian AeAe banana. Some claim that ‘Florida’ and ‘AeAe’ are two distinct types, but our research does not seem to indicate any real difference between the two. In any case, this banana probably originated in Southeast Asia, then made its way to Hawaii at some point where it became widely recognized. Legend has it that this beautiful white-striped banana was grown exclusively for Hawaiian royals.
As you can see, this plant has a distinct white & pale green striping/variegation to the leaves, and bright pink ridges on its petioles. The fruit it produces is also beautifully variegated, and as it turns yellow the striping fades. Flavor is reported as good and the fruit is seedless. This plant should receive special care to maintain its beauty: Plant in an area with shelter from wind, and light shade. Maintain the soil’s pH on the lower side to preserve the variegated coloration. You can keep the soil pH low by adding pine bark, peat moss, or granulated sulfur once or twice per year.
